OOBIAN – The new knowledge management (KM) software

15 years ago, the software industry reacted to companies’ concern in knowledge management, providing document management solutions that allowed scanning, cataloging and document indexing. In the meantime, new complementary solutions have emerged: solutions to assist document flow and adjacent business processes, advanced search solutions and integration with existing IT systems such as ERP, CRM, Office tools and email.

In the last 5 years, the ECM systems emergence focused on information sharing was the big step. Progress has been made in terms of search engines and small agents to treat all kind of documents. The biggest evolution was “collaboration 2.0”, allowing the automatic content publication on the Web, Blogs, Wikis, etc. OOBIAN was built for the new knowledge management generation tools often referred as semantic web. This denomination came from the need to relate intelligently the scattered and different format data.

There is a real need to relate an accounting document with a Word document, a PDF, an image, an email…None of the previous tools were able to relate and aggregate data. In addition, it was urgent to think about a way to extract information more accurately, based on contextual interpretation, beyond metadata. As an example, if the word I’m looking for is jaguar, the previous systems weren’t able to distinguish between “jaguar-animal”, “jaguar-car” or any other related issue. However, if I program the system in order to interpret semantically a text, based on a wildlife ontology, all the system search results will be related only to this animal.
